Bruxism

What is Bruxism?

When you first wake up in the morning, do you notice any pain or discomfort in your mouth and jaw? If you rise out of bed with dull to sharp pain that starts in your jaw but may radiate to your temples or ears, you may have a condition known as bruxism.

Bruxism is a fairly common condition that affects both children and adults, though children are more likely to suffer from it. If left untreated, bruxism can cause several painful and harmful side effects. At Encino Cosmetic Dentistry, we encourage anyone with these symptoms to come in for an assessment to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.

What are the Causes and Symptoms of Bruxism?

Bruxism often goes undetected for a long time, and many people are unaware they have it until a partner or dentist notices the signs. Common symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Pain in the jaw.
  • Unexplained earaches that persist.
  • Headaches focused around the temples.
  • Tightness in the jaw muscles.
  • Worn-down, chipped, or loose teeth.
  • Cuts or lacerations on the inside of the cheeks caused by accidental chewing.

The causes of bruxism are not entirely understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to it:

  • Stress is a major factor.
  • Age can play a role, with bruxism being more common in children.
  • Men are more likely than women to experience bruxism.
  • Family history of bruxism increases the risk.
  • Personality types, such as “Type A,” may be more prone to bruxism.
  • Certain medications, alcohol, or tobacco use can increase the risk.

How is Bruxism Treated?

Treatment for bruxism depends on the severity of the condition. Some cases resolve on their own, while others require intervention. Treatment options include:

  • Stress Management Therapy: Learning to manage stress can help reduce symptoms.
  • Night Guards: Custom-fitted mouth guards worn at night can prevent clenching and grinding.
  • Medication: Certain medications can help alleviate bruxism symptoms.

Addressing Underlying Causes: Identifying and treating the root cause can provide relief.
